History
Originally there was a cotton mill on the site, then around 1850 it became a grist and saw mill. This was ultimately torn down by Lewis Tompkins in 1878. Tompkins was one of Beacon’s most prominent hat manufacturers and he built the Tioronda Hat Factory as an adjunct to his Dutchess Hat Works in Fishkill Landing. The former factory on South Avenue continued to operate as a hat shop until 1948. At that point, the property was purchased by Atlas Fibers Company, which began textile processing operations there in 1949.
The property at 555 South Avenue has undergone several incarnations over the years.
